There's a girl who might have lice at school, and it sorta scares me.

I haven't yet gotten lice, and I don't feel like to.
Any suggestions to avoid them?

PostSubject: Three types of lice to Avoid   Ah no! The lice are Here! EmptyMon Apr 07, 2008 6:29 pm

Taken from given site at the end.

Louse infestation is a continuous problem in our society today. While head lice are the most common and well known infestation, there are also body lice and pubic lice. Head lice have reached the severity of an epidemic across the United States, but body lice and pubic lice are just as much of a concern.

Body lice are known to infest clothing, as they lay their eggs on the fibers in the fabric seams. Head lice and public lice are similar in that they infest hair, laying their eggs in hair fibers. All three types of louse take blood meals by piercing the skin of the individual with their narrow mouthparts. While there are several similarities between the three kinds of louse, there are several differences as well.

First off, the frequency and who they infest differs from each louse. Head lice are an extreme problem, especially in urban areas, that is becoming far too common amongst our society. Major infestations are common in socioeconomic groups because of how easily they spread. They are extremely common in schools with younger children because parents are reluctant to tell anybody about their child's problem.

How can head lice be prevented?

Educate parents and schools about head lice. All parents should know that outbreaks of head lice have nothing to do with a family's income, social status, or level of personal hygiene.
Avoid direct contact with a person who has lice, or with their clothing or personal belongings.
Watch for signs of lice, such as frequent head scratching. Nits do not cause symptoms, but they can be seen on the hair shaft; they are yellow-white and oval-shaped.
Teach children not to share combs, brushes, scarves, hair ribbons, helmets, headphones, hats, towels, bedding, clothing, or other personal items.
Examine household members and close contacts of a person with head lice, and treat if infested.
Make sure schools, camps, and child-care centers provide separate storage areas (cubbies or lockers) and widely spaced coat hooks for clothing and other personal articles. They should assign sleeping mats and bedding to only one child and store these separately. They should wash dress-up clothes and play costumes between use by different children. During an outbreak, costumes should not be used in the classroom.
Exclude children with head lice from school or day care according to the institution's policy.

PostSubject: What a Louse Is   Ah no! The lice are Here! EmptyMon Apr 07, 2008 7:07 pm

A louse is a parasite (say: par-uh-site), which means it feeds off of other living things. Lice (the word for more than one louse) are about the size of a sesame seed, and are tan to gray in color. Lice need to suck a tiny bit of blood to survive, and they sometimes live on people's heads and lay eggs in the hair, on the back of the neck, or behind the ears. It's very easy for a person with lice to give it to another person when they come into close head-to-head contact with each other. Sometimes, lice can be transmitted by friends sharing things that have touched the hair, such as combs, brushes, hats, and headphones. Lice cannot jump or fly, so a person can't catch lice by simply sitting near someone who has lice.

If your head is very itchy, tell an adult immediately. Getting lice has nothing to do with being dirty, and it's very common among kids who are in school together. It is something that will need to be cleared up as soon as possible.

What a Louse Bite Looks and Feels Like
If a person gets lice, it doesn't feel like anything at first. A louse lays tiny, oval eggs called nits. They are yellow, tan, or brown before the lice hatch. After the lice hatch, nits appear clear or white. They look a little like dandruff flakes but they can't be shaken off. The lice mature within 1 to 2 weeks and begin feeding and attaching their tiny claws to the hair shaft. Louse bites look like tiny red spots on the skin, and they are very itchy.
